Artist biography

Audrey_Kawasaki_paintings

Audrey Kawasaki is a Japanese-American artist currently living and working in Los Angeles. Her work depicts sensuous young women on wood panel, with a strong emphasis on line quality and facial expression. The themes in her work are both innocent and erotic, each subject is attractive yet arresting.

Audrey’s precise technical style is at once influenced by both manga comics and Art Nouveau. Her sharp graphic imagery is combined with the natural grain of the wood panels she paints on, bringing unexpected warmth to the enigmatic subject matter.

Do you envision your characters as inherently good or deceptively dangerous?

Both, but more towards the latter. I imagine that, if she appeared in front of me, I would keep good distance. Her charm would be undeniable, and I’d be drawn to her, sure, but I’d rather watch and observe her from afar. I wouldn’t want to get entangled in her affairs. I think for me, as the artist who creates them, I like the idea that they are mysterious, secretive and difficult. Their intangibility makes for a good story and keeps me interested.
