Artist Biography

Candice Tripp is a South Africa born artist living, and working from her studio, in the North East of England. At 21 her darkly humorous paintings caught the eye of a local gallery who provided the platform for her first solo show. At 22 her work was being exhibited in LA.
Child-like subjects pluck at adult themes in paintings whose narrative provide all the answers one could expect to find on single page torn from a book. Entirely self taught, her ever-evolving practice now extends to include etching, sculpture, brass work, full scale installation and most recently jewellery design.
She has had solo shows in London and New York and recently provided the artwork for Arrow Video’s release of Donnie Darko.
Are the landscapes of your paintings influenced by your current surroundings, specifically the fact that they are often set in spooky forests?
I used to paint loads of negative space because I like the idea of everything surrounding the characters being uncertain. I think the woods are a perfect substitute while still having a visual presence. It’s a lot of nothing that can contain endless possibilities.
