Artist Biography

Greg “Craola” Simkins was born just south of Los Angeles. He grew up with a menagerie of animals including a number of rabbits, which often emerge in his paintings. He started doing graffiti under the name “CRAOLA” at 18 and became his impetus for creating giving him the confidence to paint large works.

This experience taught him perspective, colour theory and further developed his artistic skills, which later translated into his work with acrylics. Simkins pursued his desire to paint as a full-time artist and has been featured in numerous group exhibitions and had successfully sold out solo exhibitions.

It is his careful weaving of pop culture, the old masters, nature, carnival kitsch, and (most importantly) his warped imagination, that makes Greg Simkins a sought-after surrealist painter today.

What inspires your work? How do you go from point A to point B?

I love storytelling and old stories from my youth still inspire me. Fables and tales that involve going into magical worlds like Narnia, Wonderland, Oz, etc. will always stir up images of the different things you would find there. That is why I created my own world called “The Outside”. It helps make sense of my cast of characters and strange lands.
